journey Establishing goals and having a plan

Life is a journey. Do you find yourself not moving forward towards the goals in the journey of your life? It might be that you need to begin letting go of the past in order to focus on where you are going. It might also be that there are just too many responsibilities in your life that demand more than you should be giving right now.
I’ve seen too many people let life dictate to them what they “should be doing”. They wander around being thrown by waves of circumstance. We all have responsibilities and things that simply have to get done but we should not let those things take over every minute of our time. We need to have a plan.
We need to establish goals. These goals however should be according to God’s will for our lives. God has a purpose and plan for every child of His.

Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

He knows this plan from even before we were conceived: in fact even before the foundation of the world.

Ephesians 1:4
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight in love. (NIV)

world Unfortunately people live each day without acknowledging this.
The best thing to do is to discover God’s plan for our lives and then plan according to His will. We can only achieve true spiritual contentment when we live according to His plan for us. We can flounder around blind to His plan for us or we can wake up and see God in little things and pay attention to what He is telling us is His plan.
There’s a saying:
If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.
This is so true about each and every aspect of living.
We need to have goals according to God’s purpose- and there has to be a plan to achieve them.

Proverbs 19:21
Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

Before I came to the Lord (and you can see more of that in my personal Christian salvation testimony ) even though God was talking to me I had put my hands over my ears and chosen simply to not listen to Him. If we make our own plans while ignoring the Creator of the Universe- these plans will always be “less than” or second best – and they may even be completely opposite to what God truly wanted for us. This is why it’s very important to communicate and listen to Him. He always wants the very best for us.
It truly is very simple. We need to strive to achieve God’s goals in life. If you haven’t written down the goals for your life I strongly suggest that you start by doing that. Pray about it and ask God for direction in His purpose for your life. Once you have a certain understanding of what those are for your life then it’s time to take some action.

Overcoming Procrastination – Are you ready to start moving?

fear The worst thing is when we don’t even begin to move towards God’s goals for us. People tend to over complicate things and keep thinking that maybe they don’t have that “missing link” to put their lives together. They wait until they believe to have everything figured out before they take action. This kind of procrastination is rooted in fear. Fear of doing something wrong. Fear of not being perfect.
Here’s a little secret that I want to tell you: The decision to accomplish any goal should be made today. Better yet, right now- right this minute.
Yep- you heard me.
I can just hear you say – now? This minute? But I’m not ready yet!!
And I want to tell you that you ARE ready. You’re ready to take the next step. You don’t need to wait until perfection comes around to move ahead.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that we can only make goals when we are completely ready. Well is that ever truly going to happen?
Learning never ends. There will always be something that needs to be learned. We can’t wait until we know everything to actually begin somewhere. The knowledge that we already have is enough to decide to make changes and take certain steps.
Even though it may seem like a tornado hit your life – you can still be ready inside of yourself.
time Transforming the outside of your life is a consequence of an inward transformation.
You can make that decision right now.
You can decide to make changes in your life right this minute. It may take some time for the outside to catch up with the transformation that happened inside of you. But eventually it will.
You need to start somewhere.

Focus on one step at a time.

But start the first step right now.
Make a conscious decision to not focus on the little imperfections so much that you end up not seeing the big picture.
Action breeds confidence. When you begin to see yourself moving forward you will be inspired to take more steps. Take the steps even if you are afraid.
If you feel that you don’t have the tools and the knowledge to achieve your goals then incorporate the learning into your life. But don’t let this factor stop you from moving ahead.
Move forward with the knowledge that you DO have. Trust God in every step that you make. Celebrate each time you achieve any progress.

Joshua 1:9
…Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (NIV)

striving Do you know how to be realistically positive?

When setting goals another thing that is very important is to be realistic. If you had nothing else in your life to tend to then you could achieve certain goals much faster.
But the reality is that we have several things to juggle in life. Take into account all aspects of your life when setting goals and make them achievable ones.
The worst thing is when people make goals that are terribly difficult to achieve and then feel like a failure when they don’t reach them. Everything takes time and changes can happen. We need to be patient and take into account that unpredictable things happen all the time. When really bad things happen we need to hang on trusting God and believing in Him through crisis. Problems shouldn’t stop you.

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.(NIV)

When you feel unmotivated then re-energize yourself. Meditate on encouraging Bible verses for inspiration to move ahead. Spend some time in God’s presence worshiping and praising Him . As soon as you are inspired by the Lord keep going in His direction for your life and never – ever quit.

    A very inspirational post.

Procrastination on my part, especially pertaining to my online aspirations, is due to fear. This I know. I am guilty of not getting started. Fear holds me back. Perfectionism holds me back. Being perceived by others as less than competent holds me back.

I hear all the time that the key is to start. I understand this, but that doesn’t take the fear away. Starting is the hardest part because I don’t want others to see what I don’t know yet. Appearing amateurish and haphazard and incomplete is a fearful proposition.

But lately I’ve been having this conversation with myself and I really do believe I’m getting closer to starting. I have an idea where I want to end up. I know where I want to get to and I have an idea about which method I want to use to get there. I can’t see the whole picture just yet, but I’m much closer to starting than I used to be.

Keep posting, I’ll keep reading. Bless you for your efforts.

It’s funny that there are two lines of thought when it comes to making goals. One line says that you should ignore realities, and focus on your goals in a way that says nothing will be able to stop you. I think the goal of that line of thinking is that you will not take no for an answer if an obstacle steps in your way.

The other line of thinking is more like what you said in the end, about expecting that reality will come into play. At least with this line of theory, we will not be discouraged when obstacles do knock us off our course for a bit. Because we know that it was a possibility, and we know that it doesn’t mean we failed – it just means we need to try again.

    Inspiring words!

    Very true Kristi,
Unrealistic expectations don’t help us to keep our motivation level high.
High energy and motivation are essential to achieving our goals. People don’t take that into consideration when they establish goals.
Thanks so much for stopping by.

  5. Liz

Now if that doesn’t inspire you to set goals I don’t know what will. Thanks for that Erin, it’s truly inspiring!

Thanks Liz- I really felt inspired to write this.
I can see that the Lord is helping me establish His goals for my life every step of the way.
I’m very excited because I know He is leading the way.

Thanks for having a site to inspire people in Gods word i have been a Christian for 3 years and now i am a student also learning in ethics through a secular college. Please keep me in prayer as now studying to work in Human Services.

    Hi Juan,
I’m so glad that the Lord used this article to inspire you. Including Him in our perspective on everything in life will help us gain a right vision of things. People have taken their Creator out of the equation of life and this doesn’t help anyone.
I’ll be praying for you and your college studies. My husband is almost done with his Physics degree. I know how much it requires of him so I can imagine how much you need to study.
If you want to keep updated on the articles on the site, you can sign up for the Christian newsletter at the top right.

Finding god again, has help me deal with me having an affair, after meing married for 37 years to a great man.I guess you can say i let evil in,he has since forgiven me and so has god.I’m still trying to forgive myself i’m gettting there but its not that easy.I still love my husband very much, but i do still think of my friend as he was a very special friend at the time.Letting go of that has been very diffcult.Everyday is a challenge, but i do ask god to help me go on.I know the pass is not erasable,it is what make us who we are today. So i really have to live for today, not yesterday or tommorow. So just for today i will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me.If my my mind fills with clouds.I will chase them away with sunshine.

    Hi Quinn,
This is very weird but I knew that I had answered your comment many months ago. I know I did. So I’m pretty sure it got lost when my blog imploded a while ago. I got it back online but I don’t know if you ever read my response. Very weird. Now that I’m reading back I don’t see my response to you posted so I’ll just write another one 😉
First of all I want to say that I have suffered from the same fear. But I started to understand that it was all in my head. No one starts off knowing it all. We learn as we go. One of the things that Lynn Terry has always said- just do it and go back and make it perfect later. Listening to that piece of advice of hers has gotten me way ahead in what I do. I’m not perfect and don’t claim to be. I write about the things that I know and have lived. And what I do know from experience has helped many people. This motivates me. Helping others.
I personally know your qualities Quinn. You are one of the funniest people that I know. It would be a great blessing for others to get to know you as a person and experience your witty humor. I’m sure it would bring a lot of joy to others (and boy does the world need more joy).
I pray that the Lord guide your decisions and path.
    God bless,

@ Gbolahan – Once you have a clear guidance from the Lord as to what you are to be doing simply write out the tasks that you need to do to accomplish His goals for you. Make a list of things that need to be done. Then start doing them every day. That way your actions are in alliance to where you are going.
    Hope this helps,

@Miriam – I don’t know what wounds in your heart caused you to look for love outside of your marriage. But God knows everything that you have gone through. He loves you so much. You are his special child. God’s love for you is so immense that He suffered terribly and took upon all of the consequences for your sins. And when he died, all of your sins died right there with Him. Now all you have to do is believe in His sacrifice for you and for all that you did that was wrong.
No one is perfect – nobody but Him. So accept His gift Miriam. Don’t ever let the devil keep you stuck in the rut of guilt. That’s exactly where the enemy wants to keep you. But God cleanses everything that you have done.

“I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake…” Isaiah 43:25

So leave what you did in the past. Put it behind you. Because God has a purpose and a plan for your life and if you hold onto the past you are hindering His purposes for you.
You are forgiven sister. You have received His complete forgiveness. Be healed- you are a new creature in Christ Jesus.

“Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things are passed away; behold, new things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

    Love always ♥,
    Your sister in Christ,

  13. miriam

Thank you Eren, for your encourageing words. It does help when you are not judge.Only god has the right to that,i’m seeking help with others in a church group.I really to this day don’t know why i looked outside my marriage when things were going well,i guess i will never know. But i must make mends with myself and my family.
God bless and thanks for your support.

  14. Eren Mckay

Thanks, Erin. I needed the reminders of your verses.

  16. Eren Mckay

    Hi Chris!
I’m so glad that these verses have helped you. Many times we already know the truth but we just need to remember it 😉
    Blessings ♥,

Beautifully written and expressed Eren! Thank you so much for posting this. I will definitely be sharing this post.

    Love & Light

  18. Eren Mckay

Thanks Christine! Yes we need to keep our spirits lighted with that inner fire and just keep going because God has a purpose and plan for each one of us on Earth. We can only truly be happy if we discover what that plan is and fulfill it. Glory to God!
    Blessings sis!

  20. Angel

Hi Erin! I can’t explain finding you on the web today by anything other than divine intervention!
I am struggling so bad, with letting go of the past & setting goals for myself that are attainable & also line up with God’s Purpose for me. I don’t yet know what his purpose is & I don’t know how to find out..
My Husband & I have been separated for 4 yrs & hadn’t spoken a word to each other until the beginning of this year! We both have a lot of guilt associated with the demise of our family, that included 3 boys who we no longer have any rights to.dont even know where in the state they are.
We prayed for a son together & God blessed us greatly with Jordan.then also 2 more! Cameron & Brady.Last yr when I found out Jordan was adopted to a male couple, I committed Suicide.a month after I was released from the hospital,I tried it again.
I’m currently in a rehabilitation center for my right leg. As a consequence of that choice ,I’ll no longer be able to walk right again! Erin, I had to tell you all of this because I feel I’m at a Crossroad right now in my life. My husband had recently told me that He believes God Can restore our marriage.I told Him I want a divorce.
Reading thru your articles landed me here thinking of what possible goals I could set for myself after failing as a mother a wife a daughter of the King, who took such advantage of the gift he gave me to be those 3 boys mother.
God’s purpose for me keeps ringing out.& Immediately I feel as if I go thru with the divorce,Iwill be Splitting in the face of God. I want to believe I’m forgiven, but can’t forgive myself. Please pray for my husband & I & that Somehow I receive CLEAR GUIDANCE FROM THE LORD! Because as of now I am crippled by fear to take any step forward in fear I might be making the wrong choice. I apologise if this is in appropriate in any way.
God Bless You for being an instrument of his grace! Sincerely,Angel
