Genesis 3:17-19
“And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life;
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou [art], and unto dust shalt thou return.”

As you can see, work was not a consequence but the ground was cursed. That means that before sin Adam could produce the food with much less work but now with the curse he had obstacles.

With only a small amount of work Adam could reap the results in the Garden of Eden.
There were no thorns and thistles and illnesses to contend with before sin.
But even though none of these things existed there still was work. God ordained work before the fall which means work in itself was not a punishment.

We find this truth in

Genesis 2:15
“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.”

Being productive and working is a wonderful blessing that God has given us. We just saw the verse in which He said this even before the fall.
The faithful angels in heaven also work. God’s faithful angels did not sin yet they work. They have a purpose. Work is an opportunity to get something accomplished. It’s a part of our purpose here on Earth.


God uses our efforts and our work to bless other people also.
Even animals and insects were created with a purpose. The Lord designed them in such a way that they naturally work and build things for themselves and their families.
Squirrels store up their food to last all though the winter until spring comes around again.
Here’s a very cute video of a chipmunk (which is a kind of squirrel).

The ant is another example of not being lazy. Even though the ant doesn’t have a “boss” it still works very hard.

God tells us in His word that we need to look at the ant as an example of how we should be.

Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
Provideth her meat in the summer, [and] gathereth her food in the harvest.

You see ants and squirrels not only work for what they need today. We should also think ahead and prepare ourselves for more difficult moments. We should do just as the ant does.
Having fun is great and there is a time and a place for having fun. It shouldn’t be our goal to have fun all day long. There are things in life that aren’t fun. But they are necessary.
When these “out of reality” T.V. shows promote being lazy and not thinking ahead they are encouraging others to believe a lie. The fact is that we need to think ahead and work. The consequences of not working can be devastating as we see in the following verses.

Proverbs 6:9 – 11
“How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
[Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.”

As you can see from these verses there are consequences to being lazy.
There are also rewards for working hard. We must be thankful for all of our blessings.
On the other hand, there are those that are the complete opposite of lazy and work way too much. Their life is all about work. That is the other extreme of things which also is not correct. There’s a time for everything – a time to work and a time to rest as we see in

Ecclesiastes 3:1
“To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

We need to be balanced on how we see work. It’s a blessing.
Another word for laziness is slothfulness. Any time there are thoughts of frustration for having to work or if you feel like being lazy simply remember these Bible verses.

Proverbs 19:15
“Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.”

Proverbs 19:24
“A slothful [man] hideth his hand in [his] bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.”

2 Thessalonians 3:10- 12
“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.”

Kids Bible Sermon overcoming laziness & a slothful sluggard spirit

The hospital was really close to their home so in 5 minutes they got there. The nurses took Mrs. Mendez straight to the delivery room.
Johnny waited with daddy in the waiting room.


Daddy called grandpa and grandma and all of the family to tell them of this great news. Soon everyone arrived at the hospital and waited for news from the delivery room.

The nurse came out to the lobby where they were waiting and said:
“Congratulations! You have a healthy baby boy of 9 pounds!
You can go into their room and see them now.”

The whole family went into the room excitedly. Johnny looked to the side of his mommy’s bed and saw a crib next to her and little bundle in that crib.
When he got near the crib- he began to smile.
“What a beautiful baby!” he thought.
Johnny looked at that cute little face with such a small nose! He knew he would always take care of his baby brother- he felt such love for him.
“Look grandpa- he’s sooo little!” he said.
“Yes Johnny – when we are first born we are really little. We are also very, very dependent on everyone else for everything. When babies are first born they need someone around all the time. They need help even to turn over- they don’t have the strength yet to do even that” said grandpa.
“Where are his teeth- how is he going to chew?”
“Oh his teeth won’t come out for another 6 months.” said grandpa.
“How in the world will he chew?” asked Johnny.
Daddy saw that Johnny was confused on how his baby brother would be able to eat so he tried to explain.
“He won’t chew- he will only drink milk right now. When we are really little we depend on everyone for a whole lot of things.
The truth is that even after we grow up we still are dependent on many things” daddy explained.
“Really, daddy?! You don’t seem to need much- you’re so strong and big!” Johnny exclaimed.
Daddy chuckled when he saw that Johnny thought he was so strong.
“Let’s go out in the lobby so your mom can sleep and I’ll explain more to you.
Daddy got a Bible and went with Johnny to the lobby and sat on a comfortable sofa
“You see Johnny- I need things just like all human even when they become adults. The most someone can go without water is 3 days- the most time we can go without breathing is only a few minutes. We need food, water, shelter and so many things.
But I know of someone who doesn’t need anything at all” said daddy.
“Who daddy? Is he a superhero?!” Johnny really wanted to know who was this “superperson”!
“No, superheroes are not real – they are made up. I know of someone REAL who needs nothing at all.” Daddy explained.
“Who daddy? Tell me!” asked Johnny again.
“The only one who doesn’t need anything at all is God. The Almighty God. He doesn’t need anything or anyone. In His Word we find that he called himself the I Am. A long time ago. God spoke through a burning bush to a prophet called Moses and said:
Exodus 3:14
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
That means that He simply IS – He doesn’t need absolutely anything.” Explained daddy.
“WOW! God sure is awesome!” exclaimed Johnny.
“Look Johnny. Look at this verse in the book of Isaiah:
Isaiah 40:28
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, [that] the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? [there is] no searching of his understanding.
This verse means that He never gets tired and there is no way to even measure his greatness.
“So He is super powerful, right dad?” asked Johnny.
“Oh yes- He is All powerful. He exists by His own power. He is the only one who doesn’t need anything to exist.
He is awesome and great and no one else is like Him.
Acts 17:24-25
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Neither is worshiped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Johnny thought about the verse and said:
“That means that all things exist because of Him. Like He is the source of life- he doesn’t need anything to live. Everything and everyone else needs Him to exist –right?”
“Right son- you understood the verse really well. I’m sure you’ll be able to teach your little brother great things about God.”


“Let’s say a prayer and thank God for giving us life and for giving us a precious new member to our family.
Dear God,
Thank you for giving us life. We understand that we are totally dependent on You and not self sufficient. Please help us to be humble and never think that we are fine on our own. We want to thank you for the wonderful blessing of our new baby in our lives. Please bless his life and help Johnny to be a great big brother to him.
In Jesus’ name, Amen”
“Amen.”
“Let’s go see if mommy woke up.” said daddy
“Okay-let’s go.” said Johnny.
